Evgeni Finkelstein is an outstanding Russian master of classical guitar. His playing is marked by wonderful sound, extraordinary fineness and intense musical expression. These qualities are coupled with a brilliant technique to fascinate the listener.
Evgeni Finkelstein is well known especially for his interpretation of Russian music. His major musical theme is the guitar music of contemporary Russian composers like Nikita Koshkin and Gennadi Belyaev with their uncanny expressive quality, their exciting dynamics and sharp contrasts. Finkelstein’s performing of variations of Russian folk songs in the arrangement for classical guitar are penetrating, deeply felt and forceful, with a great deal of emotional warmth. His Russian guitar music recorded on CD in Germany under the title “The Fall of the Birds” won particular acclaim in the U.K. “Classical Guitar” magazine.
In transcriptions for classical guitar of works by J. S. Bach the artist expresses purity, harmony and grandeur, which a German newspapers described as “absolute music”.
Evgeni Finkelstein has given concert performances in top venues in Russia including the Moscow Conservatory Concert Hall and the Great Chapel Hall in St Petersburg. He has also played in concerts in Vienna, Berlin, Oxford, and many more in England and around Europe.
He performed with great success as co-soloist with Yuri Bashmet and the “Moscow Soloists” Orchestra in Vivaldi concerts for viola, guitar and strings in D-minor.
He is inspirer, initiator, art director and active participant in festivals for classical guitar in Russia and Ukraine. In May 2010 hundreds of listeners were fascinated by the splendid concerts of classical guitar in the Crimea, which were inspired by Evgeni Finkelstein.
